Engineers should identify solutions and weigh their pros and cons prior to selecting the best. The solution must also be able to meet the project constraints (e.g. cost, materials, and space).

After the most effective solution is selected, it is recommended to design a model of the product or equipment. Then, tests can be conducted to determine if the product does what it is supposed to.
